We need to talk about . . .
    Talking about discussion items
The first thing we need to discuss is . . .

    Presenting Options
      We have several alternatives:

    Moving on

The next item (of business) is . . .
We need to go on to the next item.
      Shall/Should we move on?
    Stalling the Discussion
Before we move on, I think we should . . .
      Wait a minute. We haven't discussed . . .
      Don't you think we need to . . .
      Not so fast. We haven't (yet) . . .
    Asking for Clarification
      What to you mean by . . . .
      I don't quite follow you.
      I didn't get what you meant by . . .
      Could you clarify that?
      Could you elaborate on that?
    Making a Suggestion/Proposal
      I think we should . . .
      Maybe we should . . .
      I suggest . . .
      Why don't we . . .
      How about . . .
      We could . . .
    Giving Feedback
      (I think) that's a good idea.
      You have a good point.
      Good idea/point.
      I agree.

      I disagree. I think . . .
Sorry. I don't agree with you.
      You have a good point, but . . .
That's not such a good idea.
      I don't think that's a good idea.

    Asking for Opinions
      What do you think, George?
What's your opinion on that, Martha?
      Any thoughts on that?
      Any ideas?
    Checking for Consensus
Do we all agree (on that)?
      Does everyone agree?
    Summarizing
      In summary,
      The conclusion is . . .
      So, we've decided to . . .
      We're going to . . . (then)
    Closing the meeting
      That's all for today.
      That's it then. (informal)

    1. “Must” dan “have to”, berarti keharusan :

    -         When do we have to hand in our report?

    1. Bentuk negative dari “must” dan “have to” adalah : “must not”, dan “doesn’t/don’t have to”. Tetapi artinya tidak sama.

Must not = keharusan untuk tidak melakukan sesuatu

Doesn’t/don’t = tidak dibutuhkan untuk melakukan sesuatu

      1. Dea mustn’t leave today
      2. Dea doesn’t have to leave today

Pada kalimat a. Dea is not permitted to leave today. (forbidden)

Pada kalimat b. Dea can leave anytime she wants. She doesn’t need to leave today

    1. Dalam pertanyaan, “must” biasanya diganti dengan “have to”, khususnya dalam percakapan bahasa Inggris.

    -         Must you leave so soon?                       Do you have to leave so soon?

Yes, I really must                      Yes, I really have to

No, I don’t have to                   No, I don’t have to

    1. “Be required to”, juga berarti kebutuhan.

    -         I am requested to take an aspirin (must take an aspirin)

    -         I was requested to fill a form (I must fill a form)

    -         Serly should leave the hotel early

    -         People ought to eat fresh fruit daily

    -         You shouldn’t forget your mother’s birthday

Tetapi “should” dan “ought to” tidak setegas seperti “must” atau “have to”

    Analyzing Problems

    Image

    Focusing on the main problem/issue

    What is the main problem?

What is the real issue (here)?

    (I think) the major problem is . . .

    Our primary concern is . . .

The crux of the matter is . . .

(As I see it), the most important thing is . . .

The main problem we need to solve is . . .

We really need to take care of . . .

It all comes down to this:

    Asking for input

What should we do about it?

    What needs to be done?

What do you think we should do?

What are we going to do about it?

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Any ideas?

    Making Recommendations

    I recommend that . . .

    I suggest that . . .

    I would like to propose that . . .

    Why don't we . . .

    Elaborating

    Image

    Asking for Elaboration

    Could you elaborate (on that)?

Could you tell me a little more about it?

Could you give (me) some details?

Could you fill me in on that?

    Could you expound on that?

What else can you tell us (about that)?

Is there anything else you can tell us?

    Is there more to it?

    Elaborating

    To elaborate,

    To give you more information,

    Let me explain.

    Let me elaborate.

Let me tell you a little more (about it).

Let me give you some details.

    What's more,

    Clarifying

    Image

    Clarifying your own ideas

    In other words,

    What I mean is . . .

    What I'm trying to say is . . .

    What I wanted to say was . . .

    To clarify,

    Asking for Clarification

What do you mean (by that)?

What are you trying to say?

    What was that again?

    Could you clarify that?

    Clarifying another's ideas
                You mean . . .

    What you mean is . . .

    What you're saying is . . .

    (I think) what she means is . . .

    What he's trying to say is . . .

    If I understand you, (you're saying that . . . )

    If I'm hearing you correctly,

    So, you think (that) . . .

                           So, your idea is . . .
